What is a Functional Nutritionist?

A functional nutritionist is a professional who specializes in nutrition, diet, and their impact on health. Functional nutritionists promote health and well-being by providing dietary advice, education, and guidance. Their expertise lies in understanding the nutritional needs of individuals and communities and offering recommendations to support optimal nutrition and prevent or manage health conditions. Functional nutritionists focus on all areas of health, including lifestyle and sleep habits. Human beings are not one-dimensional, so you can expect your care to be as multidimensional as you are!

What forms of payment does Barefoot Nurse Nutritionist take?

We currently accept select Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare, and United Healthcare plans. If you are out-of-network, we will gladly create a super bill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement and can accept HSA and FSA as payment with an accompanying referral from your healthcare provider. We believe nutrition care should be accessible to everyone, so if finances are a concern please ask us about our sliding scale rate.

Will my health insurance cover Nutritionist services?

Yes, but you must have them send us a referral first! Insurance companies LOVE nutritionists because we save them money! Always verify benefits with your insurance provider before scheduling or you may be responsible for the cost. We currently accept Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare*, and United Healthcare commercial plans.

*Currently, Medicare only covers a limited number of sessions per year for Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease. All Medicare clients must supply a referral from their doctor before we can schedule an appointment.

***Please note: functional lab testing is not covered under insurance, but you may be able to pay for testing with an HSA/FSA. Appointments to review lab results are covered by insurance.***
